It's brassica season

This means all your favorite crunchy vegetables are starting to see their peak season in these cooler temperatures. Tammy was able to buy all the colors of cauliflower at the Farmer's Market, so when you order our wok-seared cauliflower, you will get a jewel-box of colors.

Other brassicas we serve are gai-lan, cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, turnip. While we still serve these year-round, we make it a point to buy them locally grown, at peak flavor, and for brassicas, that's right now. Brassicas can be harvested even after a snowfall, and will over winter nicely if you let them. Keep them in the ground for the wildlife to feed on in the winter. In the spring, the same plants will bloom flowers and keep producing a crop. Last year's kale yielded this year's baby kale. Keep this in mind when you want to see green things popping out of your garden in the springtime. The Farmer's Market is still open and it's important to learn what is in season as each week goes by. Look for the Locally Grown labels. Hot tip: Look for the ground cherries-  Minnesota's juicy tropical-tasting fruit.

Fall days before the frost are the time to plant garlic for harvest next year. It's one of the easiest crops to grow and is almost fool proof. It's such a relief when the green garlic shoots pop up through the snow in the early spring time. As with all tasty food, it's only as good as what you feed it- so make sure to grab that last bag of compost in the garden supply section before it sells out. Below is one of the most garlicky dishes we serve. Can you see all the minced garlic? The garlic gets toasted and crunchy, and after you eat all the squid, scoop up all that remains on the plate - the crunchy garlic, ginger and scallions and eat it on rice or add it to your Big Bowl Noodle soup. You won't be disappointed.

Covid Update

We are still a take-out only operation, and we don't know if and when we will open up to dine-in. The dining room has been used as dry storage for the past year and the seating area by the front windows is still the plant nursery. We still feel strongly that the delivery operations remain on hold, and not be channeled out to the many delivery options that other restaurants use. As a woman-owned family business, that promotes quality over quantity, we'd prefer to have control of how our food reaches you, and these services may or may not come up to our standards.  Chef Tammy would often be the delivery driver so she could personally connect with you, as she did in the dining room. She is currently nursing an ankle injury and needs to take it easy, though that won't stop her fast hands- she is still making all the hand-made appetizers that you know and love. Additionally, we don't want to be a slave to technology, as each delivery service requires its own iPad. Five extra screens is what we counted at other businesses; we don't need more screens in the kitchen or the dining room. We hope you understand. Please don't solicit us with requests to join your favorite delivery service.
